Clothing at the New You is unique, versatile, comfortable, affordable, and colorful. It will take you from morning coffee to evening cocktails and dinner. I sell one-of-a-kind hand crafted sundresses, skirts, unisex shirts, hoodies, and jackets. The majority of clothing here at New You is "upcycled" - recreated and made uniquely new again. Fashion should be about self-expression, and here at the New You, we can do just that - help you comfortably dress in a way that is "Uniquely You!" Shopping here is pleasant, relaxed and comfortable. I guarantee there is something for everyone here in my store!
Our personalities are reflected by the way we dress and look. And it just happens that my individual style is a conservative modern hippie look, and the shop I created holds all the clothing and accessories I love to wear! Apparently I am not alone with my taste and longing for comfort... literally twenty-four hour clothes are what I wear and sell. What a privilege it has been to meet like-minded people since opening day.
What is Upcycling?
Upcycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful! One of the goals of upcycling is to prevent wasting potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones. This reduces the consumption of new raw materials when creating new products and this can result in a reduction of energy usage, air pollution, water pollutants, etc. Upcycling is the opposite of downcycling. Downcycling is the process of breaking down discarded items into their base materials so they can be remade into a new consumer product, often of a lesser quality.
When upcycling and item you may be refashioning it, like taking a dress and sewing it into a skirt, dying a shirt and adding lace, tie dying a white "onesie" or t-shirt - but it is still made of the same materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better than the original.
Plain and simple, upcycling makes a positive impact on the environment. When you upcycle, you remove items from the global garbage stream. Upcycling instead of recycling is good too; recycling requires energy or water to break down materials. Upcycling only requires your own creativity and elbow grease. What is old is new again, but with a twist!!!
There are two ways to support the upcycling movement. Sort through your closets and create items yourself, or purchase ready-made items created from upcycled materials at the NEW YOU!!!! When you purchase a product at my store, you are doing two important things:
- SUPPORTING A SMALL LOCAL BUSINESS
- HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
A woman can NEVER have too many handbags. At the New You I have colorfully embroidered hand-crafted bags from Mexico, both spacious and comfortable on your shoulder with extra wide padded straps. We have woven backpacks as well as handmade bags from Nepal - each one different and sure to please young and old. In addition, New You has locally crafted hand bags sewn from previously worn jeans and clothing of beautiful fabrics. We also have many small, handy purses and key chain coin purses that make great gifts!
The "Cool Stuff" in the New You is what stops virtually all customers in their tracks; they walk in and say, "Wow! I just LOVE this store. It is so cool. I need more time to take it all in. I can't wait to tell _____ about it!" For the baby boom generation it is a very nostalgic experience. From the wooden toys, tie dyed clothing, Grateful Dead T-shirts, belts, bandanas, and buttons... peace signs, incense, Mexican blankets. I hear often, "I used to have one just like it!"
